Sinking the Ship of State, Again, 2004

Description

Like so many others, this composition is the result of the methodology used in its production. Quick numerous rotations of the work in its development in the search for definition resulted in the making of unconscious paper choice decisions that form its imagery…a great ship breaking apart in a “things…men” created storm.

The notion that such a storm could descend upon a nation twice in two decades of time is at play here. A political association is made to the Bush/Cheney Administration (2000-08) and again to the Trump/Pence Presidency (2016-20). Mother Nature began each of these misbegotten administration with a storm; Katerina for Bush and Marie for Trump, and in the face of both challenges, serious administrative malfeasance prevailed. Through the course of both administrations, a demonstration of executive incompetence, a profound inability to chart a responsible course through the turmoil of various additional storms (the collapse of the housing market and the coronavirus pandemic) resulted in driving the ship of state upon the rocks, twisting it apart, leaving it in tatters and despair.
