SAKKAL - CUVISM - FINE ART

Ignition, Lift-off, 1999

Description

In high school, the artist was identified by his art instructors to possess a high aptitude for visual art. They advised him to inform his parents to send him to art school to further his abilities. His father, following years of adjustment to living in a new country, while surviving the Great Depression had finally established himself as a manager in the New York garment district. The way up was hard; many years spent in a sweat shop environment. He vowed no son of his would have to endure his experience. So when his son informed him what he was told, that he was advised to study art, he raised complete opposition to the prospect. His father held a high regard for engineers. He informed his son to forget about being an artist. He was told that he would go on to college to study engineering.

Upon learning of the decision his art instructors were aghast. They soon came up a solution. Study architecture and take electives in fine art. His father agreed with the compromise…igniting the lift-off of a career that wasn’t wanted but forced to follow.
