A Tall Ship, 2013

Description

In 2012, Baltimore celebrated the two hundredth anniversary of the War of 1812. Numerous tall ships from nations around the world sailed into Baltimore’s Inner Harbor to pay their respect. Attending the ceremonies, the artist remembered being overwhelmed by the visual majesty these great sailing vessels from the past commanded. He asked myself whether he could create a composition to express the experience of that day.

It was almost a year later when he began the search for the composition. He avoided a preconceived image – he would employ no photographs or sketches, just a cognitive-unconscious memory of what his mind had recorded. Once the composition was established and in place, it was simply a matter of consciously, deliberately, adding the enhancements of the hull of the ship and its upper sails to complete the work!
