“From the Mountains to the Prairies” by George Sakkal

In 2015, the collage artist George Sakkal identified for the first time a human cognitive creative process that no one had until then realized existed. This process, which Sakkal discovered through years of neuroscientific research, pinpoints how mankind has always created art while simultaneously proving that the Postmodern theory of art is wrong and confirming the Modernist theory of art to be true. This breakthrough discovery in art theory and all that pertains to it is called CUVISM.

Defining CUVISM

CUVISM stands for Cognitive Unconscious Visual Creativity. It identifies the neuroscientific decision-making capacity in the human brain that allows for the creation of works of Fine Art. Through neuroscientific study, one can see that the brain has a subconscious element from which creativity emulates. It is this process responsible for an automatic, uncalculated outpouring of human creativity. Every artist that has ever lived, from the time of cave painters until today, has this innate sense of artistry. CUVISM is not another “-ism,” but the name of the neurological function that allows human beings to produce visual art.

The Discovery of CUVISM

In 2009, collage artist George Sakkal published an article entitled “The Problem with Postmodern Art Theory” in the American Arts Quarterly Journal. The publication of this article launched the artist into a long-term study of the unconscious mind and its decision-making process. Research into this specific field revealed that artists’ decisions are primarily subconscious rather than conscious, favoring, without a doubt, Paul Cézanne’s Modern art theory over Marcel Duchamp’s Postmodern theory. George Sakkal’s study of the unconscious mind regarding art methodology continues to this day.

The Modernist and Postmodernist Art Theories

In the late 1800s, the artist Paul Cézanne proposed that the source of visual creativity was the subconscious mind. He believed that Fine Art originated from an innate human ability sourced from one’s skills and experiences stored in the the brain’s memory. This became the Modernist art theory.

Meanwhile, in the early 20th century, artist Marcel Duchamp claimed that it was through the conscious mind that visual artists created art. This art theory posed that deciding what was art was a preconceived, conscious process, akin to an act of faith declaring that what one saw now became art as in the readymade. Ideology replaced methodology.

It was not until the 1980s when the study of neuroscience began that it became possible to examine and seriously consider the true nature of these two essentially mind based theories of art. In the 21st century, George Sakkal has brought art and science together to show which of the two is true and which is unsubstantiated and false.

What CUVISM Means for Fine Art and Beyond

The total implications of CUVISM for the art world remains an ongoing study. yet, its discovery surely has a profound effect, nonetheless. It is the first instance of a comprehensive, scientific look at these two art theories, bringing into focus the truth or falsehood in each theory through scientific disclosure. This discovery has massive implications for our understanding of art theory, art methodology, art education, and ultimately for Fine Art itself.

CUVISM engages mentally by way of a search and discover methodology. It totally rejects Postmodern’s predetermine readymade ideology; a conscious mind preconceived conceptual art theory, a theory and practice Sakkal has proven to be fallacious and damaging to the creative mind of all artists who subscribe to its use.
